House prices are down, but rents are high, according to a new report from the home-rental website Padmapper. The three most expensive cities in the country are Toronto, vancouver and Burnaby
Toronto is the most expensive city in Canada for one home and vancouver the most expensive for two.
Toronto rents are $2,260 for one and $2,850 for two. The rent in vancouver is 2,100 yuan for one room and 3,260 yuan for two rooms. Burnaby rents are also very expensive, at $1,570 for one and $2,240 for two.
In benaby, near vancouver, rents are up 11% a year. If you look at listings on the site, there are 305 homes available for rent in burnaby, compared with 1,300 in vancouver. Obviously, benaby has a much smaller supply of rentals, so it’s no wonder prices keep rising.
Manchu ranked fourth, with one and two bedrooms priced between $1,500 and $1,780. Victoria was fifth at $1,390 for one and $1,730 for two.
The rent in Windsor, Ontario is very cheap, 720 yuan for one room and 990 yuan for two rooms.
Experts say rents have skyrocketed over the past two years as new mortgage stress tests and rising interest rates have left more and more people unable to afford homes, forcing many who wanted to buy but could not afford to do so to rent.At the same time, increasing migration has led to serious housing affordability problems in these major cities.
